DSA DEVELOPMENT LIMITED SIERRA LEONE IN COLLABORATION WITH ISLANDAID SIERRA LEONE PROMOTES SOLAR ELECTRIFICATION AND  DEVELOPMENT AGENDA IN TASSO ISLAND

Tasso Island is located along the Sierra Leone River Estuary; annexed by four chiefdoms; viz, Maforki, Koya, Lokomasama and Kaffu Bullom Chiefdoms; and it used to be the transit depot for captured slaves ready to be conveyed to Europe, America and the Caribbean.

However, notwithstanding her historical importance or colonial heritages, and being within the Freetown Municipality, yet the Island is isolated, forgotten, neglected; and deprived of the basic social amenities; subjected to economic misery and abject poverty, which situation can therefore be addressed by effective collaboration, cooperation and partnership, to promote development oriented initiatives that can ameliorate the abysmal condition of the people.

Background

The Island’s predominant economic activity is fishing but which realisable economic value or proceeds from such activity not adequate enough to cushion the burden of daily survival, or create the means to improve their social lives, or engage in infrastructural development that can give the Island a facelift and transform the Islanders’ social lives .

However, with the intervention of DSA Development Limited Sierra Leone and IslandAid Sierra Leone, its nightmare dashed, and there is now a shift to a new development paradigm or trajectory, through DSA’s intervention, to electrify the Island with solar energy, in which the first phase of the solar installations just concluded.

Situational analysis

Evidently, the Island is really isolated, forgotten and neglected; but with catalysed effort by DSA Development Limited Sierra Leone and IslandAid Sierra Leone to improve the social wellbeing of the Tasso Island community, it is therefore hoped that the second phase will be initiated in the soonest possible time, as activity implementation plan already designed.

The Island’s Development Agenda

The Island’s development agenda is multifaceted; viz, improved artisanal fishing, micro agriculture, local appropriate technology, local community tourism and local housing project, sustainable livelihood

As the second phase of the solar installation is on course, we believe that its completion will accelerate the speed for the other project to kick off, which will also facilitate or promote other development priorities.

Phase Two of Electrification

The phase of the solar electrification project has been completed, which gave the Tasso Island community pious hope for socio-economic transformation and sustainable livelihood.

And in ensuring that the islanders and community are fully provided for, the second phase of the electrification project will be initiated when funds are available. This  involves a relatively colossal funding, but it is hoped will be supported by donor agencies and multinational corporations; and friends of Islands.

 DSA Intervention and IslandAid’s Support

The Island is crying against the negative externalities of Kingho’s mining activities at pepel, being at close proximity; and no intervention is yet taken ( in the form corporate social responsibility), to remedy the situation.

However, with a collaborative tie between DSA Development Limited Sierra Leone and IslandAid Sierra Leone, it is believed that the solar Energy Project, and other long term activity or strategic plan will be formulated to address the focus areas like:

  • Island Educational Development
  • Waste Disposal Management
  • Fishing for Low Housing Development Project
  • Community Tourism development- Tourism Village and sustainable Livelihood
  • Community Entrepreneurship and Innovation/Local appropriate Technology development
  • Environmental sustainbility and climate action

Community Support

The Island’s development pathway is community driven, which therefore cannot  be carried without their fullest support, to ensure that the development is conserved preserved and protected for the benefit of all.

Therefore, with the solar light facilities just installed, they have to ensure that are secured to avoid any misuse or other societal ills

Conclusion

In view of the above, the key stakeholders and general members expressed a surge of appreciation to DSA Development Limited Sierra Leone and IslandAid for the development initiatives that are now benefiting them, to improve their social and economic lives. They however vowed that every possible means will be used to ensure the solar lights and other related gadgets are secured and protected.
